I did not want to leave this world at this time. I felt I had a choice to make — did I want to be here, or did I not? And he kind of did this big pause, mic-drop moment, like, “Are you ready? Are you ready to hear this?” I’m leaning in… and what he said is— Welcome to the Connecting to Spirit podcast. I’m Lisa Brandis, your host, and today I am joined by a very special guest speaker, Karen Churchill. She is a deeply intuitive healer and a cherished member of our community, known for her warm-hearted connection to energy and her gift of bringing harmony into the spaces around her. But today, Karen is here to share something different. We actually met in person for the first time at the Spiritual Leaders Conference, and when we were there chatting, she told me an incredible Reiki healing story. I remember thinking, oh my gosh, this story is amazing, and I asked if she would be willing to come on the podcast and share it with us. She’s been brave enough to say yes. Before we begin, I do want to start with a bit of a disclaimer: What you’re about to hear is Karen’s personal healing journey. She is sharing her lived experience, the choices she made, and the spiritual practices that supported her emotionally and energetically during a difficult time in her life. Nothing in this conversation should be taken as medical advice or a replacement for professional care. Everyone’s path with cancer—or any health condition—is unique, and your medical team should always be your primary support. We share this story with deep respect, and with the intention to inspire, not to instruct. Okay… now that that’s been said: Karen, thank you so much for being open and willing to share your journey. I know your story will bring comfort and hope—and so much wisdom—to those listening. So if you don’t mind, can we start right back at the beginning of your diagnosis? Karen: Hi Lisa, and thank you for the opportunity to tell my story. It’s a pleasure. I just went along for a routine mammogram, as we’re all asked to do, back in 2010. When I had the mammogram, they found a tumour in my right breast. They did a biopsy and then referred me to a specialist. Of course, I like to ask lots of questions and work out exactly what’s happening. Lisa: What was your frame of mind then? Karen: I’d had a few issues with my health over the years, including postnatal depression after my children were born. I found that the medications doctors gave me weren’t working sufficiently for me, so that’s when I discovered complementary medicine. I used it for various things over the years, and it had certainly helped me. After my diagnosis, I thought, I need to explore all my options. So I went to the medical doctors and gathered as much information as I could. But I had this knowing that there was something else I could do. Lisa: And were they recommending surgery? Karen: Yes, they were recommending surgery to remove the tumour. But I had this overwhelming message come through: “My body put it there… therefore my body can take it away.” Lisa: That’s such a powerful insight. And I remember you telling me your husband had passed five years earlier, and you’d already been tapping into the spiritual world. You were getting messages from him, right? Karen: Oh, definitely. After he passed, he would show me lots of different signs around the house. The power would go off, I couldn’t boil the kettle, the washing machine would stop—until I acknowledged he was there. Lisa: Wow. So he just really wanted to connect with you. That’s beautiful. So, getting back to the diagnosis… I can imagine how hard it must have been to go against medical advice. How did you have that conversation? Karen: I took a girlfriend with me because you don’t always remember everything when you’re stressed. He wanted to book me in for surgery right then, and I said, “I’m here to gather information, but I’m not committing to anything at the moment.” My girlfriend was so supportive. When he saw I wasn’t agreeing, he turned to her and said, “Can’t you convince her to book the operation?” But she said, “Karen is gathering all the information she can. She’s not silly.” Lisa: Good on her. If it were me, I would find it very hard to go against medical advice. Doctors are trying to help… but like we said, this is your personal journey. So you made that decision. You said to me that you just knew. Can you describe that intuitive knowing? Karen: Yes. I had confidence, but I also had doubt—anyone would. But there was a message coming through that I would know how to do this. And I wasn’t reckless. My GP was concerned. Friends and family were concerned. But I agreed to monthly scans, and the tumour was reducing. Lisa: So the scans were showing real, measurable change? Karen: Yes. The measurements were shrinking each month. Lisa: What did you do to support the healing? Karen: Clean eating, naturopathy, and most importantly: the power of the mind and Reiki. Just knowing: I did not want to leave this world at this time. I had a choice. Did I want to be here or not? Lisa: When my husband had leukemia, he said the same thing — “Dying is not an option.” It becomes a path of healing, not fear. Karen: Exactly. We don’t realise how powerful we are. After a few months, I had my fourth scan. The ultrasound technician couldn’t find anything. She said, “What are we looking for?” And I thought, Wow. I did it. Lisa: Incredible. Just incredible. So you put it down to the mind, the body’s ability to heal, clean eating, and Reiki? Karen: Most definitely. On Daily Reiki Practice Lisa: Did you follow a strict protocol? Karen: Not strict. Morning, night, and any moment I had to give myself that loving energy. I still do Reiki every night as I fall asleep. On the Life Lessons Lisa: What did this experience teach you? Karen: I was still grieving my husband. Life was lonely, and there were moments I wished I was with him. But the universe sent me this: “Do you really want to be with him?” I realised I needed to live—for my four boys. A Message for Others Lisa: What would you say to someone going through something similar? Karen: Believe in yourself. Know that you have power over your own health. You are in charge. No one else can do it for you. Self-love is everything. Closing Conversation Lisa: Thank you for being so brave and so generous. These stories matter, because they remind us of the power of intention, energy, mindset, and the incredible intelligence of the body. If anyone wants to work with you, can you share where they can find you? Karen: Yes—my website is karenchurchill.com.au. I work with property energy, Reiki, and intuitive healing. Lisa: Beautiful. And thank you again, Karen. Your story will touch so many lives. And to everyone listening — remember, every healing journey is unique. May this inspire hope, intuition, and inner strength. If you know someone who might benefit from hearing this, please share this episode with them. And if you’d like to explore Reiki or intuitive development, you can find more at my website.
